There are different gay neighborhoods in London including Soho and Clapham. Catch One was one of the oldest black gay bars in the US and had a lot of history. There used to be a black gay bar named Jewel’s Catch One in Los Angeles. There are two big black gay event producers Famous Ross and Brandon Anthony in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, you’re more likely to interact with white gay men but you’ll also find gay men of color. The venue is so popular that even during the coronavirus epidemic there have been lines of people waiting to be seated at the venue. The Abbey is on that strip which is one of the biggest gay lounges I’ve ever been.

The club party scene isn’t as active as before due to COVID but I guarantee you once the pandemic is over the black gay social scene is going to be lit! If you’re single and looking to mingle check out Washington D.C. Legendary party promoter Darryl Wilson would finish off the weekend with his grandiose Sunday night parties at the Park. All throughout the week, even on Sunday’s black gay events would take place. Prior to COVID the black gay party scene was lit. The Beacon Hotel was one of the spots I went to and I saw an assembly line of all types of gay men including short, tall, dark-skinned, light-skinned (my weakness), etc. I remember going there for DC Black Pride and the brunches were lit. What I love the most about D.C is the brunch scene.

You’ll find a lot of fashionable professional black gay single men in that city. DC is considered the mecca for the elite black gays and a black gay travel destination during DC Black Pride. I’ve been to Washington DC a couple of times and enjoyed the times I’ve been there. At these spots were drag performances and dances. The black LGBT community gathered in Harlem in spots like Rockland Place and other venues. As mentioned in the article “In the Early 20th Century, American was Awash in Incredible Queer Nightlife” by Natalie Zarrelli there were several places in New York City where the LGBT community. During the Harlem Renaissance black gay leaders such as James Baldwin and Langston Hughes spurred the movement with their writings. Since it’s opening, the Atlanta Eagle has been Atlanta’s premiere Leather/Levi bar.Another thing to note about Harlem is that it has a gay black history. They know who they are, so say “Hello” – you won’t know where you will end up unless you try. Unknown is the hot dance floor, the men, the urgency of the moment, the men, being able to talk to someone and did I mention the men? Most of us have been burned out by the stand & model bars, always good to know of places like the Eagle where the men aren’t trying to impress everyone. Those who have never walked in the doors have no idea what it is really like.

The Eagle opened the doors over 28 years ago and as the city around it, the changes are too many to list. They purchased the bar and returned it to its old glory. They did their best, but The Eagle was nearing an end. After the first owner lost his battle to a foe that has taken too many, his family took over. Then it was reopened as the Atlanta Eagle. So with black paint cans in hand, it closed. 1987 the doors opened at 306 Ponce de Leon, Renegade’s Bar and Grille. The place was closed and a new location was found. The neighborhood had changed from gay biker bars to frat boy hang outs. The Eagle’s history began like so many others, in 1985 the writing was on the walls for the Texas Drilling Company.
